Seven Card Stud Rules Guide

Seven Card Stud is a very popular version of poker which is literally played everywhere, from online game rooms to the house next door. In Seven Card Stud, unlike Texas Holde’m, each player has their own hand and the players do not share the community cards. The player’s hands are comprised of face down cards (also known as the “hole”) and exposed cards (also known as the “up” cards). In the game of Seven Card Stud 3 cards are dealt face down, the first two cards and then the last card, so basically each hand is made up of 3 “hole” cards and 4 “up”.

The game of Seven Card Stud has 5 betting rounds per hand. Each round is limited to a maximum of 4 bets: the initial bet, a raise, and up to 2 re-raises.

The game play of Seven Card Stud

The following is the typical order of game play at the game of Seven Card Stud:
  • Every player must ante up before the hand begins. The ante does not count towards future betting.

  • Each player is initially dealt two "down" cards and one "up" card for a total of three cards. The initial "up" card in the game of Seven Card Stud is also known as the "door card" or "Third Street". The lowest "up" card is required to start the round of betting with what is called a “bring-in” bet. If two or more players share the same lowest card during the initial deal, the player who will place the “bring-in” bet is determined by suit order progressing from clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades.

  • When the initial round of betting is complete, each player is then dealt another card, face up, which is called "Fourth Street". From this point on in the game of Seven Card Stud, the highest hand showing from the 3 “up” cards begins the next round of betting by checking or placing a bet.

  • After “Fourth Street” was dealt and a player shows a pair, the player has the option to make a single bet (low limit) or a double bet (high limit). If a player makes a low limit bet, his opponents may call his bet, raise a single bet, raise a double bet (high limit), or fold. If a player makes a double bet (high limit) and his opponents wishes to raise, the rules of Seven Card Stud dictate that the limit of the raise be equal to the high limit bet.

  • When this round of betting is complete another “up” card is dealt which is known as “Fifth Street”. The third round of betting begins and all bets and raises must be equal to the high limit as stated in the Seven Card Stud rules. The high limit betting will continue for the reminding betting rounds as well. Once again, the highest hand showing will start the action by checking or placing a bet.

  • When the betting is done, another “up” card is dealt which is known as “Sixth Street”. The same principals of betting that were applied the last round will apply to this round as well.

  • In Seven Card Stud, the final card is a “down” card and is also known as the “river” (much like in Texas Hold’em). Once again, the same rules of betting that we observed the last two rounds will apply here as well.

  • After the bets and raises have been resolved throughout the final round of betting in Seven Card Stud, the remaining players enter the showdown where the players will reveal their cards or muck (fold) the hand. The better hand (according to normal poker rules) will win.
